Weekend Trip. 48 Hours in Washington, DC
Who doesn't love a good weekend getaway? Of course when it's chilly out I would love for the getaway to be an exotic island, but sometimes you have to work with what you've got - which in this case was a roadtrip to DC. DC, being a quick 4-5 hour drive away from NYC somehow still manages to refresh the mind. 
Our first stop was a trip to Howard University's campus for a tailgate. Being that I didn't go to an HBCU, this was my first "real" tailgate experience. It's basically everyone parked up in a parking lot, having their own personal cookout with coolers full of drinks in everyone's car trunk. There are tons of lawn chairs, food trucks, fraternities and sororities strolling and just good, positive vibes with old friends catching up. Everyone is hella friendly, offering drinks and food - at least that is the experience at Howard. As you can see, that quick drive down to DC gave us the extra 10 degrees that we needed to almost feel like summer again!
After all that togetherness, drinking, and fraternizing, we worked up an appetite. I was super excited for dinner because DC has some amazing food. I was able to FINALLY try a soul food restaurant that I've been hearing rave reviews about from my friends who live locally - Eatonville. What I had was one of the most massive and tasty burgers ever. Friends also tried fried chicken, fried whiting, with candied yams, mac and cheese and collard greens. All of it was delicious and I cannot wait to go back for more!
The next morning I met up with some college friends (who didn't go to Howard University) to go to brunch. Typically when I'm in DC, my favorite brunch spots are Busboys & Poets or Ben's Next Door (unlimited mimosas that are potent with awesome chicken and waffles) but today we tried something new - another unlimited drink brunch spot called Masa 14 - a Latin/Asian fusion spot. The unlimited drinks were awesome and the food is overall good, but the most standout was the pork belly sandwich that basically assaulted our tastebuds in the best way possible. It's the kind of thing that you taste from a friend and then get mad that you didn't order it yourself. SO SO good!
To cap off our trip, before we headed back up I-95 to Brooklyn, we took a trip to the National Park to see the waterfront, the display of trees (which are beautifully laced with cherry blossoms in the Spring) and the MLK monument. All awesome sights and a great end to our 48 hours in DC. Can't wait to come back for more!
