1/2 Sushi 1/2 Sandwich - NYC
Healthy meets tasty at one of New York City's latest restaurant crazes - The Little Beet in midtown Manhattan. I'm constantly on the search for healthy food that tastes good. There are but so many salads I'm willing to eat, and half of them don't even taste good, honestly. Maybe my palette is just skewed from years of what I consider great tasting food, but it is what it is.
With my office in midtown Manhattan, I often feel stifled by the buttoned up, over-polished restaurants in the area. I also don't feel like there are a ton of affordable food options, or enough food options that taste good, to begin with. A blogger friend who works nearby, Cassandre of LosingInTheCity.com, is a Little Beet fanatic! She swears by their food and has been telling me to try it for weeks. (She's also a super duper health lover who has admitted to liking bland food at times, so I was on the fence haha.) But after a lunch-break work out - in hopes of an ab, I finally caved in. I felt like I was just doing myself a disservice by ordering something with a side of french fries right after running for my life.
If you remember a while ago, I shared my love for Bahn Mi sandwiches. So when I saw that Little Beet had Bahn Mi on the menu, I thought... NO WAY! Then upon closer investigation I read the details: Introducing the Shi-Witch (part Sushi, part Sandwich) The Bahn Mi - chicken, pickled vegetables, guacamole, cilantro and chipotle rolled in brown rice and a beet wrap. OOOOH ok, totally different from the Cambodian love I had for my traditional Bahn Mi sandwiches, but I had already waited on line so I was committed (stuck.)
I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor, which had sort of a Chipotle thing going on (this is a good thing) in addition to a fresh sushi vibe. It was served with spicy mayo, soy sauce and a little ginger... and I got roasted sweet potatoes on the side. I'm here for it! And if you want to eat something that tastes good and is good for you, and are in Midtown Manhattan, I couldn't think of a better situation. Total meal with the sweet potato side was under $14.
