Another quick trip to Atlanta for work. You know what that means, good eating! This time we were visiting Spelman and Morehouse's campus for the SpelHouse 2014 Homecoming event. It was cool to check out the campuses, with all the legacy and black history, and the beautiful buildings and lawns. It made me miss that campus life, just a little bit.
There's so much to love about where we stayed - The Glenn Hotel. Everything in the hotel is chic and modern but not in a pretentious, elitist way. It just feels new and fresh. It's right downtown near the Philip's Arena, SkyView - Atlanta's new ferris wheel, Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca Cola and tons of restaurants, bars, and hotel nightlife. They greeted us with spiked lemonade upon check in, which was my equivalent to being greeted with rum punch on an island vacation. ALREADY WINNING! The staff is extra pleasant, as are most people in Atlanta. Also on the roof there's a sexy rooftop bar, Sky Lounge, with great views of downtown Atlanta.
Because we were so hungry and landed way after our lunch time, we dropped our bags and went right to the hotel restaurant, Glenn's Kitchen, which was LIKE THAT! We had bacon wrapped dates with reggiano parmesan and what seemed like a balsamic sauce, farm fresh deviled eggs, slow braised short ribs with parsnip mashed potatoes, with more amazing dishes that I can't remember. SO SO good! So were the drinks.
After doing a walk through at the event we, of course, were asking locals where to get the best local food. We were already in the mood for soul food and were recommended to a spot called Busy Bee Cafe. MANNNNNNN!!!! Some of the best soul food, EVER! It seemed like an endless menu of awesomeness. We tried the smother turkey wings, macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, greens, corn bread with a side of sweet tea, and peach cobbler to go. This might be my favorite soul food of the year. Honestly, some soul food makes you feel like wasted calories, but this made you feel like each and every single bite was worth it!
Since we did soul food the night before, for the next major meal that we had we wanted to do something a bit more classy. We went to Legal Sea Foods, which is apparently a chain from Maryland on down to the south along the east coast, but who knew? Tried the crab cakes, Maryland cream of crab soup, the hot lump crab dip and the best thing ever - Lousiana Catfish Matrimony - sautéed with shrimp and andouille sausage, jasmine rice and braised greens. OH MY. YES! And I pushed through to have a bite of dessert. A warm apple cake with cinnamon ice cream, with caramel drizzle. I'll be at the gym in the morning.
Heading on home hit up that old and trustie Waffle House. Yes, Atlanta, per your usual, you've been good to my stomach.
